Thorington Theatre: live performance in the Suffolk woods

Thorington Theatre is one of Suffolk’s most unusual places to see live performance, hidden among the trees with theatre, music, comedy and storytelling taking place in a woodland amphitheatre.

“There’s something completely magical about watching a performance surrounded by trees as the light starts to disappear. Thorington is one of those places that makes a night out feel like a real Suffolk experience.”

– Terezija, SCC

Theatre under the trees

Thorington Theatre seats 380 people in a natural amphitheatre created by a Second World War bomb crater. The theatre was built with a deliberately small carbon footprint, using timber from chestnut trees sustainably coppiced from the surrounding woodland.

The setting is a big part of the experience. Arrive early for a picnic, then head into the woods for an evening of performance as daylight gives way to the trees after dark.

What’s on at Thorington Theatre

The summer programme moves between theatre, live music, comedy, Shakespeare, opera, poetry and family performances.

This August has included everything from The Magic Flute and Romeo & Juliet to comedy and puppetry. Thingumajig Theatre’s current performances bring giant puppets into the woods, including an illuminated barn owl and towering glowing caribou.

The season continues with Walk the Road: A Celebration of American Folk Music on 29 August and The Interpreter, combining storytelling, live music and visual art, on 31 August.

Make a weekend of it

Thorington Theatre is exactly the sort of place we love sharing: independent, imaginative and unmistakably Suffolk. Plan a performance into your stay and explore cottages across the coast and countryside with SCC.
