Lumos Experiences: Suffolk by candlelight

There’s something rather special happening after dark in some of Suffolk’s most beautiful buildings. Lumos Experiences brings live music into historic churches and atmospheric spaces, transforming them with hundreds of candles for intimate evenings of music.

“I love discovering something a little different to do in Suffolk, and these candlelit concerts in some of our most beautiful buildings look really special.”

– Terezija, SCC

Candlelight concerts across Suffolk

Lumos stages candlelight concerts in remarkable venues across Suffolk, including Southwold, Aldeburgh, Framlingham, Lavenham and Bury St Edmunds.

The idea is beautifully simple. Musicians perform familiar music in unexpected surroundings, with programmes ranging from classical works to interpretations of artists including Fleetwood Mac, Coldplay and ABBA.

These photographs were taken at a recent Coldplay candlelight experience at St Edmund King & Martyr Church in Southwold. Hundreds of candles filled the church as the audience gathered for an evening of live music just moments from the coast.

The setting is a big part of the experience. A building you might wander into during the day becomes something entirely different after dark, filled with music and flickering candlelight.

It’s another example of the more unusual things to do in Suffolk. Alongside the beaches, countryside and familiar landmarks, you’ll find concerts in medieval churches, independent galleries, festivals, performances and plenty of unexpected things to discover.

Make a weekend of it

With Lumos events taking place in some of our favourite Suffolk towns, why not turn an evening out into a weekend away?
