FIRST LIGHT FESTIVAL, LOWESTOFT

Every June, the Suffolk coast welcomes one of its most unique events as First Light Festival returns to Lowestoft’s South Beach. Music, art, wellbeing, family activities and sunrise celebrations come together at Britain’s most easterly point, creating a weekend unlike any other on the UK coast.

“There’s something magical about watching the UK’s first sunrise arrive over the sea with thousands of people sharing the moment together.”

– Donna, SCC

What is First Light Festival?

Held on the sands of South Beach in Lowestoft, First Light Festival celebrates the summer solstice and the unique position of the town as the first place in the UK to see the sunrise.

The free festival brings together live music, dance, storytelling, visual arts, comedy, science, wellbeing sessions, workshops and family activities across the seafront. Visitors can spend the day exploring creative experiences before gathering once again for the famous dawn celebration as the sun rises over the North Sea.

Why First Light Festival is so special

Unlike many festivals, First Light embraces the landscape around it.

The beach becomes a stage. The sunrise becomes part of the programme. Families build sandcastles between performances, music drifts across the dunes, and wellbeing sessions take place with the sound of the sea in the background.

The festival’s atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, making it as appealing for families and day-trippers as it is for music lovers and culture seekers.

What to expect

From live music on the beach and art installations to comedy, storytelling, family workshops, wellbeing sessions and local food stalls, First Light Festival transforms Lowestoft’s seafront into a vibrant celebration of creativity and community.

With more than 200 performances and activities across the weekend, the highlight for many is the sunrise gathering on South Beach, where festival-goers welcome the longest day of the year as the UK’s first sunrise appears over the North Sea.

While you’re visiting, take time to explore Lowestoft’s historic seafront, harbour and gardens, or venture further along the Suffolk coast to make a memorable weekend of it.
